About Us
| In 2007-08, PRADAN, a well-known national NGO, explored expanding into Northeast India as part of its long-term planning. After discussions, PRADAN chose not to set up a full team in Assam, but agreed to support an independent local initiative for two to three years, since some of its staff from the Northeast were keen to work there.
In May 2008, PRADAN professional Aswini Bhattacharya moved to Assam and set up base in Bongaigaon. With PRADAN’s support and a small grant from Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, he began working with small farmers in Bodoland on the System of Rice Intensification (SRI). Despite early setbacks from ethnic conflict and a drought in 2009, the work grew steadily, reaching 8,000 farmers through local partnerships. |
