About Us
Manab Kalyan is a registered non-profit organization established in 2007 and headquartered in Darrang, Assam. The organization was founded by a group of committed young individuals with the objective of improving the lives of poor and vulnerable communities through sustainable development and humanitarian action. Its journey began with community-led initiatives to address the growing burden of cancer in West Darrang through awareness campaigns and free health camps in collaboration with Dr. B. Borooah Cancer Institute, Guwahati. Over the years, Manab Kalyan has expanded its work to include public health, livelihoods, disaster response, climate-resilient agriculture, and community development across rural Assam.
Vision: A healthy society characterized by unity, equity, honesty, social justice, and peace.
Mission: To promote the socio-economic and holistic development of poor and vulnerable communities, with a special focus on children, women, and marginalized groups through interventions in health, education, livelihoods, and community empowerment.
b. Scope and Scale of Work
Manab Kalyan works across the districts of Darrang, Kamrup, Baksa, and Udalguri in Assam, implementing programmes in partnership with government agencies, donor organisations, and civil society institutions. The organisation’s thematic areas include public health, maternal and child health, nutrition, sustainable livelihoods, disaster risk reduction, humanitarian response, climate-resilient agriculture, and community development. It adopts a participatory approach by engaging with Self-Help Groups (SHGs), Village Health Sanitation and Nutrition Committees (VHSNCs), Village Organisations (VOs), Panchayati Raj Institutions, and local volunteers to ensure community participation, effective implementation, and sustainability of interventions.
c. Key Achievements
Since its establishment, Manab Kalyan has implemented a range of development and humanitarian initiatives benefiting vulnerable communities across Assam. The organisation has:
Conducted cancer awareness programmes and community health camps in collaboration with Dr. B. Borooah Cancer Institute.
Implemented programmes on maternal and child health, nutrition, hygiene promotion, and preventive healthcare.
Supported the Government’s COVID-19 response through community awareness campaigns, vaccination drives, relief distribution, and livelihood impact assessments.
Promoted climate-resilient agriculture through farmer outreach and the demonstration of Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) practices to improve water-use efficiency and enhance resilience.
Responded to recurrent flood emergencies by distributing food, hygiene kits, and essential relief materials in collaboration with government agencies and humanitarian partners.
Built strong partnerships with community institutions and local volunteers to facilitate timely and effective implementation of development and humanitarian programmes.
d. Experience with Previous and Ongoing Grants
Manab Kalyan has implemented programmes supported by the Ajim Premji Foundation, Ashraya Hastha Trust, and government agencies, including the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). These partnerships have strengthened the organisation’s institutional systems for programme management, financial accountability, procurement, monitoring, and reporting. Through these collaborations, the organisation has successfully implemented interventions related to disaster relief, health, women’s empowerment, and community development while maintaining close coordination with district administrations and local stakeholders.
