| Youth Volunteers’ Union (YVU) was founded in 1970, when five teenagers mobilised relief during a devastating flood in Thoubal and its adjoining villages. Registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 (No. 1015 of 1972), it grew from relief into structured development work – youth camps, public libraries, village infrastructure and adult literacy, and from 1974 campaigns against liquor and immoral trafficking – funded entirely by local contributions until its first external support from EZE, Germany in 1981. Over five and a half decades YVU has worked in more than 400 villages across six districts of Manipur and in Tripura, reaching over 3.5 lakh people, with support from more than 15 national and international agencies including EZE, MISEREOR, WaterAid, CLWR Canada, SIDBI, CAPART and Tata Trusts.
